Our project, Mediterranean, located in Aberdeen, was no exception. The space was long and narrow at the front but gradually widened towards the back due to an angled wall. This presented both opportunities and challenges in crafting a layout that was functional yet aesthetically appealing.
One of the main hurdles in designing Mediterranean was fulfilling the planning stipulation for additional toilet provisions. Several iterations of the layout were necessary to accommodate these requirements while ensuring the space remained versatile for different group sizes. The goal was to create distinct areas with varied seating arrangements, allowing flexibility for both intimate gatherings and larger parties.
With no existing architectural features of interest, we took the opportunity to introduce our own. False walls were constructed to incorporate square and arched niches, bringing character and depth to the interior. These niches not only added visual intrigue but also provided an opportunity to integrate decorative elements that enhanced the Mediterranean theme.
The overall design aimed to capture a modern yet natural Mediterranean feel. To achieve this, we introduced a striking patterned black-and-white tile that ran throughout the floor and continued into the niches, creating a seamless and cohesive look. This bold graphic element provided a contemporary contrast against the warm, earthy materials used elsewhere in the space. Wood accents, grass pendant lights, and antique white sand-textured walls helped to bring the natural Mediterranean aesthetic to life. The introduction of dimmer switches to all the lighting, combined with LED strips, allowed us to manipulate the ambiance, catering to different times of the day and customer moods.
A standout feature of the design was the ‘foliage cloud’ that ran the full length above the fixed seating tables. This installation, interspersed with various lengths of cables holding feature Edison bulbs, created an organic, atmospheric experience—reminiscent of a Mediterranean courtyard where nature and design coexist harmoniously.
To reinforce the feeling of an open-air Mediterranean retreat, the ceiling was designed with a combination of exposed beams and white-washed paneling. This detail contributed to a sense of height and openness, further enhancing the overall ambiance of the space.
Soft furnishings played a crucial role in tying the design together. Textured sand-colored fabrics complemented the natural materials, while bold black-and-sand striped cushions and blinds provided a modern, graphic contrast. These elements added warmth and comfort, ensuring that the space was as inviting as it was stylish.
The transformation of Mediterranean from an empty shell into a vibrant, welcoming deli bar was a journey of creativity and problem-solving. Through thoughtful layout planning, architectural enhancements, and carefully selected materials, we achieved a space that balances functionality with a strong design identity. The result is an interior that transports visitors to a Mediterranean courtyard—right in the heart of Aberdeen.
